Cause of the Success of Shivaji
The following causes coupled with
some other minor ones helped Shivaji in the establishment of an independent
Hindu kingdom in the heart of the Mughal Empire.
Shivaji’s Character :- The main cause
of Shivaji’s success was his character and personality. He was a great military
genius and at the same time he possessed administrative virtues also. He was a
successful administrator. Guru Ram Dass, Jija Bai and Dadaji Kondeva had
greatly influenced the character of Shivaji. To establish a Hindu Kingdom in
the teeth of Muslim opposition did not prove to be a difficult task for the
Maratha chief due to the great teaching of these wonderful personalities.
Physical Features of Maharashtra :-
The geographical situation of Maharashtra greatly helped Shivaji to become a
political and military leader of great reputation and significance. It is a
hilly country, hence nature has guarded it. It provided a large number of
impregnable forts on the summits of hills. These forts strengthened the
Marathas from physical and military points of view. Shivaji utilized all the
geographical resources and organized them into a compact power.
Political Conditions of the South :- The
political conditions of the south were quite favourable. The Marathas had
already trained themselves in military affairs under the Muhammadan rulers of
Deccan. They were experts in Guerilla tactics. As the Mughals were fighting
against the rulers of Bijapur and Golkunda, the task of Shivaji was not very
difficult. He consolidated the Maratha race, scattered like atoms in the
Deccan, into a mighty nation and attained success against the Mughals.
Decaying Condition of Mughal Empire
:- The decaying condition of the Mughal empire was another important cause of
Shivaji’s success. The Mughal Empire had grown in bulk and the means of
transport and communication had not improved much, hence it was not possible
for the Mughal emperor to control the affairs of the empire from the centre
alone. Aurangzeb was made to act as a Shuttlecock between North and South and
peace and prosperity slipped away from where he absented himself. Moreover,
constant wars drained away the wealth of the royal treasury and it crippled the
strength of the Mughals. A bankrupt government failed to face the attack of
Marathas efficiently. Thus, the decaying structure of the Mughal Empire helped
Shivaji a lot in achieving success.
