Sayyid Dynasty
|
Region -A.D. 1414
to 1451
Founder - Khizr Khan
The last ruler of
Tughluq dynasty breathed his last in A.D. 1413. As a result, chaos and
confusion prevailed in the Delhi Sultanate. Amirs and nobles were divided in
different groups and a conflict started among them for establishing their
control over the Sultanate. Although Daulat Khan stood victorious in this
conflict, he failed to establish law and order. Taking advantage of the
disorder and lawlessness in Delhi, Khizr Khan, the Governor of Multan, invaded
Delhi and established his control and his coronation ceremony was performed on
23rd may A.D. 1414. With his accession to the throne of Delhi a new
dynasty came into existence which came to be known as Sayyid Dynasty.
Generally in Arab
Countries the followers of Prophet Muhammad are called Sayyids. They are
liberal in their attitude and maintain high character like Prophet Muhammad.
They have great respect in the Islamic world. But in India Sayyids are
considered persons of high class in the Muslim society. Although class and
caste system has no significance in Islam, the Muslims who settled in India
were greatly influenced by Hindu theory of class and caste. Hence various classes
such as Shaikhs, Sayyids, Mughals and Pathans surfaced in Muslim society. The
place of Sayyids was supreme among them. Khizr Khan was a Sayyid. Although he
proclaimed himself to be an ancestor of Prophet Muhammad, yet this claim of
Khizr Khan holds no justification. Most probably, his ancestors came from
Arabia and settled in India. As the Sayyid rulers did not put forty any
political ideals, nor did they do anything to improve the lot of the people. The
process of downfall which began during the reign of Tughluqs continued and
within forty years the Sayyids lost their empire to another dynasty known as
Lodi Dynasty.
