Nasiruddin Khusrau Shah
Nasiruddin Khusrau Shah
|
Sultan of Delhi
Reign – A.D. 1320
Died – A.D. 5th September, 1320
After the murder
to Mubarak Shah, Khusrau Khan begged pardon of the nobles for his bloody act
and ascended the throne with their full support and cooperation on 15th
April, A.D. 1320. He assumed the title of Nasiruddin Khusrau Shah. He also
received the favour of famous Sufi Saint Nizamuddin Auliya and his supporters
by distributing money among them.
Although he
bestowed titles and rewarded the Turkish nobles and tried his best to gain
their favour, a section amongst them hated him from the core of their hearts as
he was originally Hindu and embraced Islam later. Ghazi Malik was the leader of
the opponents of Khusrau Shah. He sought the favour of the Provincial Governors
of Multan, Uchh, Sehwan and Jalore. He instigated them along with the general
public against Sultan Khusrau shah for his anti-Islamic acts. Ghazi Malik and
his son Juna Khan, having gathered a large army in Punjab, presently marched
towards the capital. Khusrau Shah made desperate efforts to win support from
all and sundry by scattering the royal treasures among them but he could not
succeed in saving his own life. As Ghazi Malik reached near Delhi, Khusrau Shah
had to come out from the capital to face the challenge near Indarprastha. Ain-ul-Mulk
and other Muslim nobles who appeared to have reconciled themselves to the new
setup turned against Khusrau and withdraw themselves from the battlefield along
with their troops. Khusrau Shah, however fought with courage but was defeated
and killed on 5th September, A.D. 1320.
The decline and
death of Khusrau Shah was a great tragedy. He was the second converted Muslim
who fell prey to the Turkish intrigue. The racial consciousness seemed to be
very strong among the Turkish nobles. Dr.A.L. Srivastava has severely condemned
this tendency of the Turkish nobles and remarked, “Khusrau was a Musalman.
It did not matter what he had been before his conversion to that religion. As
Islam claims to be a democratic religion and believes that kingship is not the
monopoly of any privileged class but belongs to those who have the power and
ability to hold it, there was no reason why Khusrau should have been debarred
from enjoying the position he had won.”
