Abu Bakr Shah
Tughluq Dynasty |
Sultan of Delhi during
Tughluq Dynasty
Reign – A.D. 1389 to
1390
Father – Zafar Khan
After beheading
his cousin Tughluq Shah, Abu Bakr ascended the throne in A.D. 1389. Although he
was an efficient ruler and his mental faculties were quite developed. He was
soon involved in internal conspiracies and civil war.
Firoz Tughluq’s younger son Muhammad tried to
become the sultan under the title of Nasiruddin Muhammad shah. Thus so long as,
Muhammad lived, his position was quite unstable, so a civil war broke out
between the two.
Muhammad shah made Jalesar, the centre of his
activates and various Amirs being dissatisfied with Abu Bakr joined Muhammad
Shah. Out of them Malik Sarvar and Nasirul Mulk Khizr Khan were very capable
and powerful. Thus the number of the supporters of Muhammad Shah went on
increasing. The Governors of Multan, Samana, Lahore, Hissar and Hansi became
his supporters. At last, Islam Khan, the Kotwal of Delhi, also joined his
party. Being terrified and confused by the civil war Abu Bakr fled away towards
Mewat and Muhammad Shah captured the throne of Delhi. After this he sent an
army against Abu Bakr which defeated and imprisoned Abu Bakr in Meerut. After
some time he expired in imprisonment.
