Babarnama / Tuzuk-i-Babari

Tuzuk-i-Babari

Tuzuk-i-Babari also known as Babarnama was written by Mughal Eperor Babir in Turki, his mother-tongue. It is a very important source material for the history of the period of Babar. Hence in due course of time it was translated into various languages. The translation of Abdur Rahim Khan Khana in Persian and Madam Beveridge in English are considered the best. Historians have lavished praise about its significance. Elphinstone described it “almost the only piece of real history in Asia.”

it is originally written in Turki but it was translated in different languages in due course of time. Both Painda Khan and Abdur Rahim Mirza translated this valuable book into Persian. it had also been translated into English and French. Leyden and Erskine translated Baburnama into English from the Persian text but Mrs. A.S. Beveridge translated the same from the original Turki text. Hence it must be better and more authentic. this book does not throw light on the complete history of Babur as there are some gaps in it between A.D. 1509 to 1519 and A.D. 1520 to 1529. Its end is also abrupt and does not show systematic close. A careful reader can easily feel as if inn the last  para something is missing or lost. However, it is an important historical document and a significant source material for knowing the history of the contemporary period.

It not only throws light on the personal life and achievements of Babar but it is the most authentic source of knowing the history of the contemporary period. Owing to its significance and lucid style Babar is ranked high among autobiographers. No doubt, there are some gaps in it when Babar perhaps remained involved in wars or its manuscript having been lost, but it contains lively account of Farghana, Samarkand, Kabul and Hindustan. Babar’s description of India clearly indicates his ability to understand the things properly. Besides some political events Babar has thrown ample light on the social, cultural and natural conditions of India.
