Akbarnama
Abull Fazl was the writer of the famous book Akbarnama. Abull
Fazl was the most popular historian and chronicler of the Mughal period. His
father Shaikh Mubarak being a liberal had to suffer a lot at the hands of the
staunch Muslims but his difficulties were mitigated when he received the
patronage of Akbar in A.D. 1754. Abul Fazl was born at Agra in A.D. 1551. In
the company of his father he had seen many ups and downs. When his father
joined Akbar, he, being a sober student of Islamic theology, attracted the
attention of Akbar. Soon he began to be counted among the bosom friends of
Akbar. His friend and master assigned him the work of writing an account of his
reign sincerely and he performed this duty fully well. Abul Fazl fully utilized
the other Persian books so far published for the completion of Akbarnama.
The Akbarnama is divided into three parts. The first parts deals from
the reign of Amir Timur to Humayun and in the second and third parts the
learned author has thrown light on the history of the reign of Akbar up to
1602. Thus Akbarnama is not only a useful source material for knowing
the history of the reign of Akbar but it also highlights the history of the
period of Humayun and fills the gaps of the Tuzuk-i-Babari. Abkbar’s
expeditions, his various policies, their reasons and consequences have also
been described by Abul Fazl. Thus Akbarnama also throws light on the
political and social activities of all the Mughal Emperors. It is translated
into English by Henry Beveridge.
