The
society during the Mughal period was organized on a feudal basis.
The king was at the top of the society and below him were a number of
Mansabdars who held high offices in the state. There was no honour outside
imperial service, hence every talented person aspired to get into it. The court
was the center of wealth and culture but there prevailed misery in the country
away from the government headquarters. The Mughal nobles were very rich and
extravagant. They maintained large establishments. They had to make presents to
the court which impoverished them. Drinking liquor was a common evil among
them. All the Mughal Emperors except Aurangzeb indulged in liquor. They maintained
large harems containing hundreds or even thousands of women. They were fond of
music and maintained a large number of dancing girls. The nobles tried to
follow in the footsteps of their patrons. They had a fine taste for
architecture. Some of them encouraged learning.
The
middle class people did not live a life of pomp and show because they could not
afford it. Generally these people were businessmen or officers of the court.
Their standard of living was not very bad. But the life of the lower classes was
hard. Their clothing was scanty. However, there was no shortage of food under
normal circumstances. Among the Hindus, Sati system and child marriage
prevailed. In the time of Akbar, the condition of the Hindus was quite good.
